CETESB Acitivities in Cleaner Production
In addition to the environmental quality monitoring, licensing and fiscalization actions, the Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Ambiental – CETESB is, since 1996, actively searching for new ways to stimulate Cleaner Production (CP) in São Paulo State 's productive sector. For this, a CP unit with a specialized staff was instituted.
CETESB aim s that CP initiatives may subsidy technical assistance to environmental licensing activities in the future. In order to accomplish this goal, several projects have been developed in partnership with industrial sectors and trade associations, for publication of CP technical guides (at specific process).
CETESB has planned and carried out several voluntary projects involving the implementation of Pollution Prevention and CP programs in some strategic industrial sectors, such as textile mills, metal plating and ceramics, with environmental and economic gains.
CETESB has also developed CP activities and projects through the so-called “Environmental Chambers”, which are agencies of advisory character acting as negotiation channels between the State's environmental agency and the productive sector. Among other activities, the Chambers encourage practices such as the rational use of raw materials/energy and the adoption of cleaner technologies.
CETESB also provides the opportunity for leading or innovative businesses, with no issues with the environmental agency (zero violation), to publish their CP success stories in a special web page as a “CP Success Case” report. There are currently about fifty cases published.
